2019-04-22 Waymo
Intern, Software Engineering, Fleet Response
Mountain View, California, United States

Waymo is the self-driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to move around. Building on software and sensor technology developed at Google, Waymo is now launching the world’s first fully self-driving transportation service that will take members of the public from A to B at the touch of a button.

Software Engineering builds the brains of Waymo's fully self-driving vehicles. Our software allows our vehicles to perceive the world around them, make the right decision for every situation, and deliver people safely to their destinations. We think deeply and solve complex technical challenges in areas like robotics, perception, decision-making and deep learning, while collaborating with hardware and systems engineers. If you’re a software engineer or researcher who’s curious and passionate about Level 4 autonomous driving, we'd like to meet you.

The Fleet Response team is directly responsible for helping our cars get out of some of the most ambiguous and sticky situations in the world, allowing our vehicles to operate in increasingly difficult and complex environments. We act as an accelerator for Waymo’s self-driving engineering effort. The work of the Fleet Response engineering team spans many different disciplines, reliability and performance of distributed systems, user experience and user interface improvements, improving the behavior of Waymo’s self-driving cars, large-scale data analysis, and anything else that is required.

In this Fleet Response internship, you'll:

  • Dive into a critical system and collaborate on improvements to it
  • Write code, debug running systems, and leave things better than you found them
  • Contribute to a safe self-driving program

At a minimum we’d like you to have:

  • Familiarity with C++
  • A willingness to learn new subjects and try on different hats
  • Enjoy working with teammates in other fields
  • Must be enrolled in a BA/BS/BSE/MS/PHD program in Computer Science, Robotics, similar technical field of study

It’s preferred if you have:

  • Experience with distributed systems
  • Ability to communicate about technical subjects with a less-technical audience
  • Experience building native desktop applications
