Intern, Hardware Engineering, Telematics
Mountain View, California, United States

Waymo is the self-driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to move around. Building on software and sensor technology developed at Google, Waymo is now launching the world’s first fully self-driving transportation service that will take members of the public from A to B at the touch of a button.

Hardware Engineering is a diverse, innovative, and collaborative group of electrical, mechanical, reliability, software and vehicle engineers. We design, build, and perfect the products which are the eyes and ears of Waymo's self-driving systems, and integrate those products into vehicle platforms. We're seeking curious and talented teammates to keep us moving in the right direction.

In this internship, you'll:

  • Work with development kit(s) from pre-selected V2X chip suppliers (DSRC, CV2X).   Initial survey of existing technology in the literature and marketplace to constraint evaluation and analysis of vendor proposals
  • Efforts would include scripting tests for data collection, installation and evaluation in the field/test track. Installation portion would include integrating development kit with vehicle, localization of antennas, wiring harness and test computer.  Evaluation will include testing plan, gather, summarize and present findings of potential benefit for future Waymo technologies
  • Testing existing telematics unit on Prototype vehicle --observe any susceptibility of OTA performance when operated in conjunction of other roof-pod (sensor) systems
  • Scripting and interfacing to built-in current monitor readings to estimate power consumption under particular telematic unit test scenarios

At a minimum we’d like you to have:

  • Fundamental understanding of RF hardware and systems
  • Hands on electronics/lab  and mechanical aptitude
  • Basic software programming or scripting skills (e.g. Python, C/C++)

It’s preferred if you have:

  • Familiarity with Advanced Communication Theory
