Waymo's supply chain and manufacturing teams are making the cars of the future a reality. We handle all production processes and supplier development strategies: from contracts and purchasing, to designs for improved manufacturing, through quality control and delivery. We collaborate actively with Waymo engineering teams as well as external suppliers and partners to make sure everything is built to spec and delivered on time to meet the rising demands of our business.

In this Supplier Quality Engineer role, you'll:

  • Work closely with cross-functional team (industrial design, development, reliability, etc.) to understand the design intent
  • Evaluate potential suppliers capabilities based on project needs
  • Drive OK2X (OK2Tool, OK2Build, OK2Ship) deliverables in NPI phases to ensure readiness of supplier quality control system before each build:
    • Conduct 3D/2D drawings review and close loop with product design team
    • Review and approve measurement setup / measurement SOP
    • Conduct measurement system analysis & get buy-in from product design team 
    • Develop/implement/monitor Quality Control Plan for early detection of quality issues to ensure parts meeting/exceeding quality/reliability requirements
    • Crunch data on FAI/CPK reports to understand suppliers capability to meet design intent
    • Drive FACA analysis for major quality issues at suppliers 
    • Drive correlation activities  between suppliers OQC and FATP IQC
  • Identify equipment, fixture and tooling needs and drive implementation schedules and efforts to qualify and optimize the manufacturing process
  • Be responsible for supplier quality system management with a focus on assessing the suppliers production and quality control system
  • Collect yield performance and drive improvement actions for top hitters to bridge over to mass production goals

We'd like you to have:

  • BS degree (or above) in Optical Engineering or equivalent practical experience 
  • 8+ years of supplier quality engineering experience in consumer electronics/ automotive industries
  • Experience/knowledge in “optical” components (lens, mirrors, prisms, glass, etc.) fabrication/testing processes (grinding, lapping, strengthening, machining, coating, assembly, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience on precise optical components and familiar with key characteristics (dimensions, fringes, irregularity, focal length, transmission & reflectivity, roughness, wavefront, MTF, distortion, etc.) metrology 
  • Ability to use common data analysis tools (Minitab, JMP, etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English
  • Ability to travel domestic and international up to 80% of the time

It's preferred if you have:

  • Knowledge/experience of IATF 16949 5 Core Tools (APQP/PPAP/FMEA/MSA/SPC) 
  • CQE/CQM certification
