Waymo is the self-driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to move around. At Waymo Legal, you will work on the exciting legal issues surrounding our transformational autonomous vehicle technology and help drive our business lines forward from technology ideation through scaled commercial deployment. We partner with our public policy, safety, security and privacy experts to define transportation policy for the self-driving world to come, advising on regulatory changes that support and protect our users around the world. We collaborate with our engineering, product, strategy and operations teams to develop and protect our intellectual property portfolio and drive our corporate and commercial transactions. We ensure compliance with an increasingly complex and dynamic range of global regulations. And we anticipate, mitigate, and litigate high-profile and precedent-setting legal matters.

In this role, you'll:

  • Help scale IP operations as Waymo grows. Identify areas for increased efficiency where new or existing technological solutions can be deployed to creatively solve problems or develop time-saving workflows
  • Manage IP lifecycle processes including foreign filing decisions, patent award payments, patent annuity payments, and HR data uploads
  • Manage the administration and operation of IP Legal Tools/Systems, including docketing, portfolio management, and analytic tools and internal and external websites
  • Program manage an IP Learning & Development program for Waymo employees, including coordinating training, learning, and harvests sessions
  • Manage IP related processes related to eng testing, product development cycles, and third parties
  • Support other areas of Legal Operations, including, for example: managing outside counsel expenses, budgets and alternative fee arrangements; performing  financial analytics; and implementing best practices across law firms, including via partners via email, face-to-face interaction, written guidelines or playbooks

At a minimum we’d like you to have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Demonstrated experience in three or more of the following: patent portfolio docketing and data integrity, negotiating and managing OC budget and fee arrangements, managing IP learning and development programs, coordinating patent awards and IP team sponsored engineering events, processing third party inquiries, IP due diligence
  • Experience with IP docketing and portfolio management systems and tools
  • Excellent analytical, communication and organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects under deadline pressure
  • Proactive and creative, you enjoy looking at existing operations and processes and coming up with ways to scale and create efficiencies and incentivize behaviors
  • Ability to understand cross-functional perspectives and navigate ambiguity. Ability to identify and create streamlined processes to support a growing company

It’s preferred if you have:

  • Prior in-house experience working side-by-side with legal, engineering, marketing, and leadership to operationalize and scale the IP function
  • Experience with IP analytics systems and tools
  • Knowledge of corporate legal or finance department functions
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and team skills. Ability to present to engineering teams and senior management
  • Eagerness to work in a startup environment and flexibly roll up your sleeves as an individual contributor to help drive our fast-paced and dynamic business within a rapidly-developing and emerging industry
