Technical Lead Manager, Fleet Infrastructure

San Francisco, California, United States

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to get where they’re going. Since our start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has been focused on building the World’s Most Experienced Driver in hopes of improving the world's access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. Our Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, our fully autonomous ride-hailing service, as well as Waymo Via, our trucking and local delivery service. To date, Waymo has driven over 20 million miles autonomously on public roads across 25 U.S. cities and conducted over 20 billion miles of simulation testing.

Want to build the next generation of infrastructure for managing fleets of driverless cars? Join the Waymo Fleet Infra team in San Francisco, and help design the future of transportation!

We are looking for a passionate engineering manager who wants to evolve the systems that manage and optimize Waymo’s ever-growing fleet of autonomous vehicles, and grow our diverse group of talented Software Engineers.

The ideal candidate is someone who can be self-sufficient and product-minded, and values collaboration, inclusion, and diversity. You will partner with cross-functional teams -- operations, product, legal, partnerships, policy & privacy -- to develop and deliver business critical infrastructure.

Impact potential: As Waymo gets closer to its goal, operation of the fleet becomes an increasingly critical area of investment for the company. Your team’s tooling will be a pillar of Waymo’s ability to manage its vehicles and customer-facing service in the field.

Growth potential: Increasing demand for operational tooling drives significant team growth; constant new challenges provide an opportunity-rich environment to solve hard, ambiguous, cross-functional problems.

In this TLM / Eng Manager role, you’ll:

  • Manage team of 7+ SWEs / UX engineers who value diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Help build and evolve 3-4 critical operational tools
  • Manage individual projects’ priorities, deadlines and deliverables with your technical expertise
  • Collaborate with Product, Ops, UX, and other engineering teams to develop systems and processes as business needs grow and evolve

At a minimum we’d like you to have:

  • 2+ years experience managing a team
  • History and passion for creating inclusive and respectful work environments
  • Excellent communication and collaboration - ability to work across multiple teams to achieve long-term goals
  • Experience working with frontend tech (e.g. Angular Typescript, Dart)

It’s preferred if you have:

  • Passion for working in cross functional environments that include nontechnical stakeholders
  • Experience with operations tooling, developer productivity, or developer tools
  • Experience working with backend tech (e.g. C++, Spanner)
  • Familiarity with Google infrastructure (e.g. Flume, Borg, Protocol Buffers)
