Front End Tech Lead/Manager - Simulation

Mountain View, California, United States

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to get where they’re going. Since our start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has been focused on building the World’s Most Experienced Driver in hopes of improving the world's access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. Our Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, our fully autonomous ride-hailing service, as well as Waymo Via, our trucking and local delivery service. To date, Waymo has driven over 20 million miles autonomously on public roads across 25 U.S. cities and conducted over 20 billion miles of simulation testing.

Our team is focused on using simulation to accelerate the development of self-driving car software. The broader Waymo software team uses our tools as a fundamental part of their development process, as we provide the tools to rapidly and thoroughly evaluate a code change and then determine whether that change improves the car's behavior. Our vision is to tell other engineers within minutes whether a code change improves safety and comfort.

This team is critical to Waymo’s success. Often, the bottleneck in developing self-driving software is knowing how it would perform as if it actually drove for millions of miles. This is the deep technical problem we’re solving.

As a frontend TLM, you would manage the Sim Hub team. This team of experienced software engineers is responsible for the frontend tools that are the face of simulation at Waymo. This Sim Hub frontend ecosystem is how engineers launch simulations and visualize the results of simulating the car’s driving across a wide variety of situations. All Waymo SWE’s use these tools every day in order to demystify incredibly complex data and system problems – launching new self-driving features requires users to identify trends and make decisions based on filtering and aggregating a wide range of simulations and metrics. Succeeding here rapidly accelerates Waymo’s autonomous vehicle development.
