System Safety Lead, Operations and Remote Assistance

The Waymo Safety team works to promote and help to continuously improve the safety of Waymo’s fully autonomous driving technology. Our experts develop safety goals and strategies, and conduct safety engineering analyses to ensure safety is being considered throughout the design and development of our vehicles. The team develops and promotes safety strategies and policies for autonomous vehicles for its work with regulatory authorities, lawmakers, law enforcement and public and non-profit organizations. Our Safety Team also helps advise on compliance with applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations.

In this System Safety Lead role, you'll:

  • Lead cross-functional efforts to perform hazard analysis and identify potential hazard causes, assess safety risks, support the definition of safety requirements, inform architecture and design, and develop hazard mitigations and verification strategies
  • Participate in design reviews and discussions to help ensure that safety mitigations and requirements are addressed and participate in operations review sessions to ensure the safety mitigations are working effectively in the field 
  • Provide guidance on the adoption and adaptation of relevant safety standards, and industry best practices, and help ensure Waymo is complying with relevant safety regulations
  • Provide leadership in defining, implementing, and improving relevant System Safety processes for Waymo’s operations, while promoting our safety culture inside Waymo
  • Support the Waymo Safety Team to oversee the program safety readiness process and metrics
  • Lead and manage a System Safety team

At a minimum, we'd like you to have:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical/Electrical/Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical fields
  • 10+ years of relevant engineering work experience that includes minimum 3 years of System Safety engineering
  • Experience in leading and managing an engineering team
  • Hands-on experience working on an engineering program that delivered a product to market
  • Experience in performing hazard analyses (e.g., Hazard and Risk Assessment, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Failure Modes, Effects, and Diagnostic Analysis, System-theoretic Process Analysis (STPA), Safety of the Intended Function (SOTIF), etc.)
  • Experience in defining SMART safety mitigations/requirements and designing effective verification and validation methods for autonomous driving technologies and operations

It's preferred if you have:

  • A Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical degree
  • Safety analysis for complex systems, autonomous vehicles, automotive, aerospace operations or embedded systems
  • Automotive electronics / systems / software design and development
  • Experience in software development, software safety, and/or software verification and validation
  • Hands-on experience in robotics applications, software development, and/or verification and validation of such systems
