Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to get where they’re going. Since our start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has been focused on building the World’s Most Experienced Driver in hopes of improving the world's access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. Our Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, our fully autonomous ride-hailing service, as well as Waymo Via, our trucking and local delivery service. To date, Waymo has driven over 20 million miles autonomously on public roads across 25 U.S. cities and conducted over 20 billion miles of simulation testing.
We are looking for a talented software engineer to help us build and scale Waymo’s Real Time Hardware In the Loop (HIL) simulator. The Real Time Simulator accelerates Waymo’s progress towards safer, cheaper and more efficient transportation by allowing for development and validation of software without cars needing to drive on the road. It's achieved by taking the “brain” out of the car and putting it into a data center and making it think it's still driving on the road. It fills a critical gap between what can be tested in cloud-based simulation and what has to be tested on the road and is a critical part of both engineers daily workflows as well as our automated test and validation infrastructure.
If you thrive on solving challenging problems, enjoy working at various levels of the stack and jumping into many areas of complex systems, this job is for you.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to touch all aspects of the Autonomous Vehicle software and associated tooling: making critical Operating System changes, modifying the Perception and Planning systems to work better in a simulated environment, optimizing Simulation code, developing scalable and reliable services, creating good UI/UX, implementing data processing pipelines, improving test automation, evaluating and selecting future compute hardware, and scaling Waymo’s own small data center. You will work closely with many groups within Waymo – Sensing, Perception, Planning, Release, Data Science, Compute, and Systems Engineering – to improve cutting edge simulation infrastructure.

Note: The following is only applicable for roles hired in the US. As we keep the safety of our employees and our communities top of mind, COVID-19 vaccinations continue to be a critical prevention measure to help end the pandemic. Because of this, Waymo requires all US-based employees who perform work onsite for Waymo to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. If you are unable to be vaccinated, Waymo will provide a reasonable accommodation consistent with applicable law.
