Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to get where they’re going. Since our start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has been focused on building the World’s Most Experienced Driver in hopes of improving the world's access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. Our Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, our fully autonomous ride-hailing service, as well as Waymo Via, our trucking and local delivery service. To date, Waymo has driven over 20 million miles autonomously on public roads across 25 U.S. cities and conducted over 20 billion miles of simulation testing.
We are looking for a TLM to lead frontend engineering for Waymo Simulation. Simulation Frontends let the rest of Waymo launch, inspect, and analyze simulations, often at a very large scale.
Simulation at Waymo is a fundamental part of the autonomous vehicle development process. Via Simulation Frontends, Waymo engineers can rapidly and thoroughly evaluate code changes and then determine whether those changes improve the car's behavior. Our developer-facing tools aim to tell other engineers within minutes whether a code change improves safety and comfort and enable them to make data-based engineering tradeoffs.
Simulation is also key to the release process of determining when software is ready to release to the road. Our frontend tools help here as well, enabling operations to assess release readiness at various stages of deployment and to make sense of data coming back from the real world.
This team is critical to Waymo’s success. Often, the bottleneck in developing self-driving software is knowing how it would perform as if it actually drove for millions of miles. This is the deep technical problem we’re solving.
As a frontend TLM, you would lead a team of experienced software engineers, maintain high standards for software quality, grow the team, and set the long-term strategy for internal tools at Waymo. Succeeding here will rapidly accelerate Waymo’s autonomous vehicle development.
