Software Engineer, Navigation & Sensor Fusion

Mountain View, California, United States

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to get where they’re going. Since our start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has been focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World’s Most Experienced Driver™—to improve everyone's access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. Our Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, our fully autonomous ride-hailing service, as well as Waymo Via, our trucking and local delivery service. To date, Waymo has driven over 20 million miles autonomously on public roads across 25 U.S. cities and conducted over 20 billion miles of simulation testing.

The positioning team at Waymo develops the hardware, software and algorithms to provide highly available, accurate and safety critical Pose to the vehicle. We have a diverse skill set and deep collaborations with the safety, systems, perception, motion control, and localization teams. We work with electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, calibration and reliability teams to develop hardware and then we write the firmware and high level estimation code to run on it. This all makes for an interesting and intellectually stimulating environment where we solve multiple problems at all levels of the stack.

In this role, you'll:

  • Develop sensor fusion algorithms based around strong inertial navigation principles. Characterize sensors, tune gains (we have a principled way!) and hunt for generic solutions to corner case issues (we are at a scale where this matters!)
  • Write and review C++ code to deploy algorithms. Test through unit tests, simulation, large scale data replay and infield testing
  • Develop tools to measure and monitor performance in the fleet using large scale data analysis of system errors, residuals, etc. Propose fixes
  • Collaborate and iterate with Safety and System teams to build a principled system architecture into our products early and provide ongoing guarantees for system performance and safety
  • Work in a small immediate team and as part of the larger positioning team

At a minimum we’d like you to have:

  • BS in a related field such as controls, robotics, navigation, etc.
  • Knowledge of Kalman filtering, Bayesian filtering, state estimation, statistics, sensor fusion principles
  • Professional C++ development experience

It's preferred if you have:

  • MS or PhD in related fields
  • Experience with deploying complex state estimation systems
  • Experience with sensor calibration routines
  • Deep understanding of mathematical principles behind estimation routines and how to turn those into practical implementations

Note: The following is only applicable for roles hired in the US. As we keep the safety of our employees and our communities top of mind, COVID-19 vaccinations continue to be a critical prevention measure to help end the pandemic.  Because of this, Waymo requires all US-based employees who perform work onsite for Waymo to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
