Area Description

The Simulation Team enables Waymo to simulate and analyze millions of miles of driving on Google's infrastructure every day. We can recreate, modify, and amplify our real-world experience -- or generate entirely new situations from scratch. We work with teams across Waymo, enabling rapid iterations in advancing self-driving technology. More context may be found here on How simulation helps advance the Waymo Driver. As powerful as this system is, however, there are still many open problems to solve and much work ahead of us.

Role Description

Tech lead and manager for Waymo's Simulator Realism Metrics team. This is a newly formed team with the mission to improve the performance and reliability of the Waymo Driver by analyzing, discovering and measuring simulator realism issues.

Responsibilities:

Manage a team of 5+ engineers and make direct technical contributions.
Manage individual projects priorities, deadlines and deliverables with your technical expertise.

Design and implement systems to discover and understand the instability in the Waymo driver.
Develop understanding of the reliability aspects of the on-board systems.
Work cross functionally with Waymo teams to gather their requirements and influence realism strategy.

Minimum Qualifications:

Technical leadership experience.
Experience in backend coding
Experience with offline data pipelines and metrics generation

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with Google debugging tools.
Evaluation Background
Passionate about eval work: building internal tools, scalable systems, and data processing pipelines. Making our system better through data: "If you can't measure it, you can't improve it!"

The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is listed below. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level. Waymo employees are also eligible to participate in Waymo’s discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and generous Company benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements.
