Program Manager, Machine Learning Infrastructure

The role is part of the the Labeling Program Organization; this team is chartered to drive the programs that enable the creation of curated labeled datasets which are critical for training and evaluation of machine learning (ML) models that power the Waymo Driver, ultimately allowing the technology to react to the world around it. The Labeling Program Team is part of the broader ML Infra Engineering Org in Waymo.
This role will help us set up projects that will enable the delivery of key Engineering projects for labeling as well as for the ML Infrastructure organization. In this role, you’ll drive some of the key programs targeted at improving costs, developer velocity, and streamlining internal process for the ML Infra org. Additionally, you’ll improve the project planning and delivery in a way that software engineering hours are most-efficiently utilized towards problem solving and development.
In this role, you’ll:
- Scope and set up projects serving the Machine Learning (ML) Infrastructure organization
- Define product and process roadmaps by influencing and collaborating with the following team members: ML Infrastructure leads and engineers, data warehouse engineers, Perception points of contact, Labeling Program Managers, and vendor partners
- Identify and drive the execution of various initiatives with cross-functional partners to manage day-to-day delivery as well as land large automation and efficiency initiatives
- Communicate cross-functionally and at executive level on the progress of your programs
- Continuously suggests ways to improve, create new business processes and scale-up programs within the team and beyond, relying on your appetite for innovation and scope expansion
- Support team by working on Pacific timezone working hours with an average of 2 hours of calls on IST workday evenings
At a minimum we’d like you to have:
- 7+ years of experience in technical/project management in a cross-functional environment, ideally around machine learning (ML)
- Strong experience in developing and preparing project documentation, process maps, presentations and tracking reports to provide detailed current project status reports
- Hands-on experience in Agile Project management practices and related tools
- A highly analytical mindset with demonstrated background of creating & defining metrics for a program
- Experience using technical judgment to drive project delivery, technology reviews, challenge proposals and build consensus.
- Managed cross-functional communications and had exposure to software development cycles
- Comfort dealing with ambiguity and ability to thrive in a dynamic environment
- Ability to work independently and on multiple complex initiatives concurrently
It’s preferred if you have:
- Hands-on understanding of ML-based product development and ML model lifecycles
- Experience coding in SQL or Python
- Any of the following certifications: Agile PMI, PMP
- Experience of working in a vendor-based set up
