Systems Engineer
Mountain View, California, United States

Waymo's systems engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways. We set the high performance standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance. Our technical program managers create and maintain the plans and timelines that keep projects on schedule. We're looking for talented teammates who’ll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results.

In this systems engineering role, you’ll:

  • Develop sensor-relevant vehicle behavior requirements from first principles and test data
  • Inform the sensor architecture for each future vehicle, balancing performance, cost, and risk across competing functional priorities. This involves a mix of multi-disciplinary problem solving, detailed analysis and testing, and close collaboration with domain experts and other stakeholders
  • Develop detailed testable requirements for each sensor based on the high-level vehicle requirements and architecture
  • Work with sensor hardware, perception software, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and industrial design teams during implementation to ensure requirements will be met and adjusted across the system
  • Verify and validate sensors both at the sensor and vehicle level
  • Plan and execute tests, analyze test data, analyze field issues, and understand and resolve defects, leveraging the operations team where possible

We’d like you to have:

  • Strong physics fundamentals, as well as strong engineering fundamentals spanning mechanical, electrical, and software systems
  • Background in robotics, lidar perception, radar signal processing, machine vision, and/or audio processing is a plus
  • Strong test planning and execution skills for complex systems
  • Hands-on skills required to build and integrate test or prototype hardware and software
  • Strong data analysis skills (e.g. using Python or MATLAB), including using large datasets
  • Linux proficiency and ability to write good C++ code is a plus
