Waymo & AAA Northern California, Nevada & Utah team up to educate the public on self-driving

For most Americans, the AAA name is synonymous with safe driving. Whether it’s coming to our aid with roadside assistance or helping us be more careful drivers, AAA has been an advocate for safety for more than a century, and in fact helped create the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). That’s why we’re thrilled to see their leadership extend to the future of self-driving cars.

''For millions of Americans, the AAA name has been synonymous with providing a better and safer experience for everyone who shares the road,” said Tekedra Mawakana, CXO of Waymo. “At Waymo, we could not be more thrilled that AAA will be bringing their century of experience to Let’s Talk Self-Driving, and we look forward to working together to discuss the safety and mobility benefits of autonomous vehicles with the public.''

Today, AAA Northern California, Nevada & Utah is joining Waymo and our many partners in our mission to increase awareness and education about how self-driving technology can address road safety and mobility challenges. AAA Northern California, Nevada & Utah provides Member services in seven states, including Northern California and Arizona where self-driving technology is quickly gaining speed. Working together, we’ll expand the Let’s Talk Self-Driving public education campaign, creating new content, engaging new audiences and educating more people on benefits of self-driving technology. AAA’s long-standing leadership will be instrumental in helping address curiosity about the technology.

''The partnership with Waymo and many other notable likeminded organizations in the Let’s Talk Self-Driving campaign is a critical addition to our efforts in advocating for our Members and educating the public around automated driving technology,” said Ignacio Garcia, Vice President, Autonomous Vehicle Strategy of AAA Northern California, Nevada & Utah as well as overseeing operations in Alaska, Arizona, Montana and Wyoming. “Over a century ago, AAA led America’s transition from the horse-and-buggy to the motor car. Our goal now is to again be the public’s trusted advocate for self-driving cars, especially focused on safety.''

We launched the Let’s Talk Self-Driving campaign in 2017 with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the National Safety Council, and a number of like-minded organizations in the Metro Phoenix area, all committed to the promise of self-driving technology to change lives and communities for the better. A lot has changed in the last two years. This past December, we introduced our ride-hailing service Waymo One in Phoenix, AZ. It’s still early, but today, riders in Phoenix are using Waymo One vehicles for daily commutes, weekly grocery trips, carpools for kids and much more. As people see more self-driving cars on the roads in Phoenix and other cities, we know education will continue to be important.

We’re incredibly excited to welcome AAA Northern California, Nevada & Utah to Let’s Talk Self-Driving. We’ll continue to grow the conversation, create a community hub for discussion, and provide opportunities for people to learn about the impact self-driving technology can have to change people’s lives for the better. We welcome others to join us in this effort.
