    Today, we are excited to announce that Waymo is laying the groundwork for our fully autonomous ride hailing service in Munich, Germany. With over 20 million trips completed and hundreds of thousands of commercial rides served each week, we are now bringing our fully autonomous driving technology to one of the world’s premier hubs for automotive engineering and urban mobility. In the coming weeks, you’ll start to see Waymo vehicles on the streets of Munich where we’ll begin driving manually across the city. We are taking a rigorous, phased approach that starts with high-definition mapping of local street networks and testing with trained autonomous specialists behind the wheel. This validation period will ensure the Waymo Driver adapts seamlessly to Munich’s distinct driving conditions before we aim to open commercial ride-hailing to the public towards the end of 2027. “Munich is a world-class hub for mobility and engineering, and becoming part of this city marks an important milestone in our global expansion,” said Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana. “As we prepare to launch, earning the community's trust is our top priority. As we expand to serve more riders in more places, we're sharing a reminder about how we approach privacy for our riders, our partners and those with whom we share the roads. Building a safer, more accessible future of mobility goes hand-in-hand with building a service that is designed to respect and protect your personal information. Our commitment to privacy is built on three enduring principles:  Let our mission—to be the world's most trusted driver—determine what data we collect and why. Give riders meaningful control over their personal information. Safeguard the data entrusted to us. We put these principles into practice through a number of commitments: Privacy by Design: We build privacy into our products, systems, and processes from the ground up, with a focus on the privacy regulations in every country where our vehicles operate. Privacy is not an afterthought. Transparency & Controls: We are open about what data we collect, why we collect it, and when it may be shared with others. We strive to continually develop and improve the tools that help our riders access, manage and, where appropriate, delete their data. Data Minimization & Purpose Limitation: Our mission shapes our data practices. We collect what we need to operate safely and to improve our service. For example, our cameras are designed for core functions like mapping routes, delivering our services safely, and improving our technology—not to surveil people or to identify individuals through facial recognition or other biometric identification technologies. Supporting Data Privacy Rights: We take our obligations to law enforcement seriously and will comply with requests that are supported by valid legal authority. And, we are equally conscious of the trust our riders and communities place in us, therefore we may challenge such requests if we believe they are overly broad or otherwise unenforceable. Strict Boundaries on Vehicle Data: We do not sell personal information collected by our vehicles’ cameras and other sensors. To support our business, our digital platforms (including websites and mobile apps) may utilize standard advertising technologies. You can opt out of these standard digital marketing trackers at any time by clicking our “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link or updating your settings in the Waymo app.  Continuous Improvement: We hold ourselves to these principles. Our dedicated privacy team monitors our practices, engages with regulatory developments, and works continuously to strengthen our protections and transparency.     • When will operations in Munich start?

      • We will start by driving the vehicles manually, beginning with mapping and validation driving. As we've done in other cities, we'll take a phased approach as we scale. After a period of manual driving, we'll begin autonomous driving with trained, local validation drivers (often referred to as 'safety drivers') behind the wheel, before moving to fully autonomous operations.

      • We will keep regulators, lawmakers, emergency services, and the public up to date as our operations expand.

      • We will be driving day and night, in several districts across Munich. These include but are not limited to Altstadt-Lehel, Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt, Maxvorstadt, Schwabing-West, Au-Haidhausen, Sendling-Westpark, Schwanthalerhöhe, Neuhausen-Nymphenburg, Moosach, Schwabing-Freimann, Bogenhausen, Berg am Laim, Ramersdorf-Perlach, Untergiesing-Harlaching, Thalkirchen-Obersendling-Forstenried-Fürstenried-Solln, Hadern and Laim.

      • If you see a Waymo vehicle on the streets, note that we are still in testing and preparation mode with a validation driver behind the wheel. We are not yet offering commercial rides and we will let the public know when we begin fully autonomous operations.

      • Our testing hours typically run 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, to ensure our technology can safely handle all of Munich's road conditions. Waymo will conduct testing on public roads under the guidelines set by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) and in accordance with the German Road Traffic Act (StVG), Autonomous Driving Act (AFGBV), and of course all other applicable laws.

      We are working hard to bring our fully autonomous service to Germany in 2027, collaborating closely with authorities to secure the required permits. This involves teaching the system local traffic laws, understanding signs based on the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals, navigating unique road geography, and adapting to specific lane disciplines and right-of-way rules for pedestrians and cyclists common in cities like Munich.

    • Will Munich be your first city with winter weather conditions?

      • Waymo takes data privacy seriously and is committed to full compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

      • Our vehicles use sensors including cameras and LiDAR to navigate safely. We do not use facial recognition or other biometric identification technologies to identify individuals. We do not use this data for advertising or share it with third parties.

    • Waymo is a subsidiary of Alphabet, Google's parent company. Can you guarantee that data collected on German roads will not be accessible to Google or US government authorities?

      • Waymo is a separate company within the Alphabet family and operates its own data infrastructure. Google and Waymo are affiliated but independent companies under Alphabet, Inc.

      • Waymo will not share personal information we collect through our products and services with Google for them to use for any purpose other than:

        • With your consent (such as if you use a Google service while in our car)

        • In connection with providing services to Waymo

        • As otherwise disclosed to you.

    • ¿Cómo garantiza Waymo interacciones seguras con ciclistas y peatones en entornos urbanos?

      Waymo vehicles are equipped with a sophisticated suite of sensors—including cameras, LiDAR, and radar—that build a detailed, 360-degree understanding of their surroundings and are able to see and distinguish between vulnerable road users like cyclists and pedestrians. Our software predicts the behavior of these road users and maneuvers our vehicles to interact safely and respectfully, giving them ample space. We also utilise visual and audio cues to clearly communicate the Waymo Driver’s intentions to people outside the vehicle, fostering predictable and safe interactions in busy urban settings with high numbers of cyclists and pedestrians. Additionally, we’ve created Safe Exit features (English language link) to ensure our riders remain respectful of approaching cyclists upon their arrival at their destination.
