¡Llegamos a Madrid! Waymo is coming to Spain

Today, we are excited to announce that Waymo is laying the groundwork for our fully autonomous ride-hailing service in Spain, beginning with the Region of Madrid. With over 20 million trips completed and hundreds of thousands of commercial rides served each week, we are excited to be a part of the region’s transportation ecosystem. We aim to welcome our first riders in 2027.  In the coming days, you’ll begin to see Waymo’s electric Jaguar I-PACE vehicles on the streets of the region. We are taking a methodical, phased, safety-first approach that begins with manual driving before progressing to rigorous technical validation with local, trained autonomous specialists behind the wheel. This validation period will ensure the Waymo Driver adapts seamlessly to the region’s unique traffic patterns and road conditions. “Madrid is an incredible capital of innovation and an integral part of our growing global presence. We can’t wait to serve Madrileños,” said Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana. “We’re proud to bring Waymo to Spain, beginning with the Region of Madrid. We share the region’s commitment to safer, more accessible, and zero-emission mobility, and we look forward to serving as a collaborative partner in achieving those goals.” Spain has a long-standing commitment to road safety and modern mobility, values that align directly with our safety-first approach. We are actively engaging with national, regional, and local authorities, and familiarising emergency services with our technology as we look to safely serve riders in the future. We are also engaging with local partners and are investing in the local operations needed to support our service. We look forward to building a collaborative presence that aligns with Spanish national and regional regulatory frameworks and community needs. “Technology reaches its true purpose when placed at the service of people. At FESVIAL, we believe autonomous driving represents a great opportunity to turn innovation into an ally of human capability and road safety, helping prevent mistakes, anticipate risks, and save lives,” said Ignacio Lijarcio, President of the Spanish Road Safety Foundation. “The arrival of new autonomous mobility solutions in Spain should allow us to move forward, with rigor and confidence, toward a mobility model that is increasingly safe, accessible, and centered on people." The Waymo Driver is designed to strengthen urban mobility, while supporting the region's vision for safer and more accessible mobility. The data from over 400 million fully autonomous kilometres driven shows the Waymo Driver was involved in 95% fewer (20x fewer) crashes involving serious injury or worse compared to humans in the cities where we operate. “Autonomous vehicles represent a major step forward in reducing traffic casualties by eliminating human error, which is behind more than 90% of road accidents. Their technology removes the main driver risks: distractions, fatigue, alcohol and drug consumption, speeding, or failing to maintain safe following distances,” said Mar Cogollos, Director for the Spanish Association for the Study of Spinal Cord Injury. “For AESLEME, the priority is to achieve safe mobility where no one loses their life or suffers serious injury in an avoidable road accident.”  We look forward to embarking on this journey with the Region of Madrid.

    • When will operations in the Region of Madrid start?

We will start by driving the vehicles manually, beginning with manual driving and validation driving. As we’ve done in other areas, we’ll take a phased approach as we scale. After a period of manual driving, we’ll begin autonomous driving with trained, local validation drivers (often referred to as ‘safety drivers’) behind the wheel, before moving to fully autonomous operations.

We will keep regulators, lawmakers, emergency services, and the public up to date as our operations expand.

We will be driving day and night, in several municipalities across the region of Madrid. Initially, these include but are not limited to Madrid City, Alcobendas, and Getafe. In the future, we intend to add other areas.

If you see a Waymo vehicle on the streets, note that we are still in testing and preparation mode with a validation driver behind the wheel. We are not yet offering commercial rides and we will let the public know when we begin fully autonomous operations.

Our testing hours typically run 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, to ensure our technology can safely handle all of the region’s road conditions. Waymo will conduct testing on public roads under the guidelines set by the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), and of course all other applicable regulations.

We are working hard to bring our fully autonomous service to Spain, collaborating closely with authorities to secure the required permits. The best way to stay informed about our expansion and service launch is to sign up here. We will notify you as soon as our commercial service becomes available in your area.

The Waymo Driver is designed and rigorously validated to operate safely in every new environment we expand to. We are continuously advancing the capabilities of the Waymo Driver through extensive real-world driving with trained specialists in cities around the globe, and fully autonomous operations in major cities.

Waymo takes data privacy seriously and is committed to full compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Our vehicles use sensors including cameras and lidar to navigate safely. We do not use facial recognition or other biometric identification technologies to identify individuals. We do not sell this data or use it for advertising.

    • Waymo is a subsidiary of Alphabet, Google's parent company. Can you guarantee that data collected on Spanish roads will not be accessible to Google or US government authorities?

Waymo is a separate company within the Alphabet family and operates its own data infrastructure. Google and Waymo are affiliated but independent companies under Alphabet, Inc.

Waymo will not share personal information we collect through our products and services with Google for them to use for any purpose other than:

      • With your consent (such as if you use a Google service while in our car)

      • In connection with providing services to Waymo

      • As otherwise disclosed to you.

Waymo vehicles are equipped with a sophisticated suite of sensors—including cameras, lidar, and radar—that build a detailed, 360-degree understanding of their surroundings and are able to see and distinguish between vulnerable road users like cyclists and pedestrians. Our software predicts the behavior of these road users and maneuvers our vehicles to interact safely and respectfully, giving them ample space. We also utilise visual and audio cues to communicate the Waymo Driver’s intentions to people outside the vehicle, fostering predictable and safe interactions in busy urban settings with high numbers of cyclists and pedestrians. Additionally, we’ve created Safe Exit features (English language link) to ensure our riders remain respectful of approaching cyclists upon their arrival at their destination.
